Academy  / Horse / Fly Repellent

Do you know what's in your fly repellent?

Summer is here, and with it come flies, mosquitoes, and ticks. Of course, we want to give our horses the best protection against these flying insects that disrupt their grazing peace. But at what cost?

    Repel or kill?

Fly repellents can be formulated in two ways: they either repel insects or kill them once they bite.

Icaridin is a repellent insecticide. It effectively keeps flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and other ectoparasites at bay. Icaridin is a more environmentally friendly option with a low climate impact. It is approved for use on both horses and humans.

Trikem has chosen not to use permethrins

Permethrin is a neurotoxin that kills biting insects by paralyzing their nervous systems. The substance is highly harmful to aquatic organisms and biodiversity. If you have horses grazing in natural pastures or near watercourses, you should avoid fly repellents based on permethrin, as they can cause harmful long-term effects in aquatic environments. In 2004, the use of permethrin as an insecticide in forestry was banned, but it is still approved for use on horses. Cats can also be affected by the neurotoxin. If your barn cat comes into contact with a fly repellent containing permethrin, it can become very ill and, in some cases, the situation may become life-threatening.

Trikem has chosen not to use permethrins in any of their products.

    Read the ingredient list

There are ingredient lists on all bottles. Fly repellents containing permethrin are labeled with a warning symbol for aquatic organisms and one or more hazard codes. If you find a hazard code on your fly repellent, you can easily look up its meaning on the Swedish Chemicals Agency's website (kemi.se).

    Think about the environment

Remember that even if we "only" spray a fly repellent on our horse, those chemicals end up in our soil and waterways. This can have insidious consequences for watercourses and biodiversity. The good news is that you can choose fly repellents based on Icaridin, which are much gentler on nature and the environment.

Choose wisely and enjoy the summer with your horse!
